How To Make Decisions With Inner Leadership

It was Monday evening. My laptop was hot.  I was prepping for a strategy meeting for the next quarter.
I opened my spreadsheet with potential priorities: replace the payment system, launch the next feature, restructure team salaries, move to a new office. And the list went on…
I told myself, “Just push through. Prioritize.”
So I did what I was trained to do: assess by impact, effort, capacity..
But something felt off.
Tight throat. No sleep. Restless energy.
And the next day?
We moved forward on priorities — but deep down, it didn’t feel right.
Why? Because we never addressed a conflict about the old platform.

I came home and finally sat down to listen.
Underneath the anxiety and urgency, it hit me:
It wasn’t indecision.
It wasn’t a lack of data.
It was fear.

You see, most of the time, we’re not upset for the reasons we think.
We’re reacting to old emotional imprints — past experiences, unprocessed memories, and protective patterns that once kept us safe, but now keep us stuck.

For me, it was the fear of confronting misalignment.
Fear of being wrong.
Fear of making things messy.

I had to process the story underneath it and take ownership of my reaction—
Only then could I bring it back into the conversation with clarity.
And from that conversation, alignment emerged.

When we override emotional cues, our nervous system stays in fight-or-flight.
Cognition, creativity, and connection shut down.
Research shows: Suppressing emotions increases cortisol, impairs memory, and fuels internal tension.

We might be moving fast…
But we’re not moving right.

But when we meet our emotions with compassion and curiosity, we build resilience, calm, and clarity.

Here’s how to shift from pushing through to strategic inner leadership:

1. Create a Safe Container to Inquire

Pause. Journal or breathe with your hand on your heart. 5 counts in, 5 out.
Let your system know: “It’s safe to feel.

2. Shift Attention to the Body

What do you feel — tight chest? Heavy stomach?

Name the emotion, not the thought.

3. Feel And Observe Without Judgement

Feel it. Don’t fix it.
Stay with the sensation, not the story.
That’s how presence builds.

4. Get Curious About the Story

What are you telling yourself?
↳ What’s the belief behind it?
↳ What is this part of you afraid of?

 5. Let the Message Land

Every tension carries truth. Meet it with compassion.
↳ What’s the need underneath? What boundaries or shifts are required?

6. Re-Evaluate From a Calm State

 Return to your grounded self.
↳ Now revisit the options and decisions.
↳ If emotion is still in the driver’s seat — process it first.

With the right support, you gain tools to take bold steps—even into the unknown—while feeling guided and empowered.

  • Who can you ask for guidance or support?
  • What resources are already available to you?

Help is all around you—don’t hesitate to reach ou

This is the power of self-inquiry – practical, compassionate leadership tool that serve me and my clients every day.
